Temporary Treatments for Premature Ejaculation Effective?

February 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

What may seem like an easy, one-stop solution for PE often is not.

After all, the ultimate goal in treating PE is to satisfy both the patient and his partner and to have ongoing, lasting results.

Viagra® and similar products are known for shortening the refractory period – meaning you can resume sexual activity without a long down time. But this benefit has no impact on the ejaculation time.

And conventional therapy, including the use of “Start and Stop” technique and anti-depressants, has limited, short-term effect. Anesthetic creams rarely, if ever, work. They numb the head of the penis as well as the partner’s vagina, reducing pleasure for both partners. Plus, as they numb, you never actually “get used” to the sensation of making love for longer periods of time, and the problem returns as soon as you stop using them..

Any of those techniques may trigger some improvement in the short term, but the effects are limited. Recent studies have shown that the majority of patients showed no sign of lasting improvement.*

Successful treatment of PE requires a comprehensive strategy that no single product can provide. At Boston Medical Group, the treatment of PE involves a stepwise approach. The underlying cause of Premature Ejaculation must be properly diagnosed before a specific treatment program can be recommended.

Effective treatment will allow you to progressively overcome both the sensitivity issue and the performance anxiety often associated with PE. Following the treatment program, you are then able to control your ejaculation on your own, without the need for further treatment.

A combination of counseling, behavioral changes and medications is usually the most effective treatment program.

Inability to Achieve Orgasm Can Be Diagnosed

February 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Did you know that there are medical tests that generally can pinpoint why you are having a problem climaxing?

Tests can help determine what’s at the root of your trouble, whether it’s biological or psychological. There is a wide range of possible causes.

One explanation may be a prostate problem, like an infection or surgery that is affecting your pelvic organs.

Tests may also uncover a condition called hypogonadism, in which the testicles don’t produce enough hormone. The same condition occurs in women, when their ovaries don’t make enough eggs. It’s most often treated by replacing the appropriate hormones. For men, that would be testosterone.

Another cause of the problem might be hypothyroidism, in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormone.

In all of these cases, there are other symptoms that can tip doctors off to what your underlying trouble is.

Sexual Rehabilitation on the Rise

February 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

An increasing number of men are turning to sexual rehabilitation, and many of them are coming out of it with improved sexual performance.  Men who have suffered from a trauma are especially in luck as positive results of sexual rehab continue to surface year after year.

Some of the first studies on sex rehab began in the mid ’60’s but it wasn’t until fairly recently did doctors begin to recognize the benefits of even discussing sexual performance as an effect of physical and mental trauma.

A study done in 1964 by Tuttle, Cook, and Fitch found that two-thirds of the 20 patients in their study, who were recovering from myocardial infarction (occlusion of the heart), received no advice about sexual activity from their doctor. “One-third received vague and nonspecific advice.”

“The most overpowering argument for providing sexual rehabilitation is that, without it, overall recovery may be delayed or extinguished.” (Frankel, 1967)

Sexual Rehabilitation can help with stress caused by the diagnosis of a disease as well as help cope with the struggle to regain one’s sexual function.  Boston Medical Group often takes this approach into account when developing treatment strategies.
