Can Spider Venom Cure Erectile Dysfunction?

November 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

According to a recent study at Cornell University, the venom of the deadly brown spider could possibly used therapeutically in treating impotence issues.  Says the London Telegraph: “A trove of potential drugs for conditions as diverse as impotence and arthritis could emerge from a study of venom from a potentially deadly spider.”

While this possibility is certainly intrguing, it’s important to keep in mind that a “spider venom” drug won’t be helping patients anytime soon.  Such a new drug would take 10-15 years to develop and bring to market even under perfect regulatory conditions.

Ejaculation Issues?

November 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Ejaculation is a touchy subject in our culture, so it’s no surprise that premature ejaculation is as well.  In fact, premature ejaculation often falls into the deep abyss of the unspoken — and how are we supposed to learn about it if we can’t talk about it?

Being as hush-hush as it is, it comes as no surprise that most people don’t know much about the types of ejaculation.  There are three main types of ejaculation; premature, delayed and retrograde.  Premature ejaculation is among the most bothersome and according to sociologist Edward Laumann, PhD, it is estimated that a third of men in America complain that they ejaculate too quickly.

Delayed ejaculation, however, is prevalent in far fewer men than premature ejaculation. An estimated 3% of men experience delayed ejaculation.  Delayed ejaculation is less prominent because many men “give up” before ejaculation occurs. Delayed ejaculation can be caused by a number of things, namely: antidepressants. Anti-depressants cause nerve endings in the penis to become less sensitive and therefore resulting in a delayed orgasm.

Retrograde ejaculation, like delayed ejaculation, can also be caused by anti-depressants as well as antipsychotic medications and is most prevalent in individuals suffering from diabetes and nerve damage. Retrograde ejaculation causes the semen to withdraw back into the bladder during an orgasm instead of being released. Because the semen is not released until urination, there are known complication when trying to conceive.

If you suffer from any of these, chances are you’re fed up.  You’re not the only one.  Boston Medical Group physicians have helped thousands of men confront and find solutions for ejaculation issues.

Sexual Health and Physical Health: The Link

November 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

We just stumbled across an article in Men’s Health that provides a useful framework for thinking about your sexual health.  The article’s main point is that keeping yourself in good physical health can have a positive effect on your sexual health.  Says Men’s Health:

“You have a built-in baromoter for your overall health: It’s called your penis. … In just the past decade, researchers have made the all-important link between sexual activity and good health. When a man’s blood vessels are healthy and “elastic,” his heart and brain are functioning well-and his erections are rock hard. … There is a powerful and unmistakable link between failing erections and common medical ailments, including obesity, high cholesterol levels, hypertension, depression, sleep disorders, diabetes, and heart disease.

The article helpfully illustrates how your physical condition can have serious implications for your sex life.

What causes PE?

November 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Premature Ejaculation is basically caused by a combination of an overly sensitive glans penis (or head of the penis), and nervousness or performance anxiety while making love. This particular anxiety is commonly associated with the fear of ejaculating rapidly and being unable to satisfy the sexual partner. The fear commonly originates from a prior experience of premature ejaculation. A single occurrence of PE therefore leads to further occurrences of PE which continues to perpetuate the problem.

PE can also occur in conjunction with Erectile Dysfunction. In cases such as these, the proper treatment plan needs to focus on ED as the primary problem to treat, as resolving it may in turn also resolve the PE problem.

Herbal Supplements for a Healthier Sex Life?

November 13, 2008 · Leave a Comment

When approaching something as important as improving your sexual health, it is imperative that you talk to a doctor about what options are best for you. While herbal supplements claim to be a healthier alternative for better sexual performance, remedies like Firmdose, Ezerex and Vicerex can lead to an array of uncomfortable consequences.

Because alternative products are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it is difficult to be sure of what you are getting; talking to your doctor is the best way to explore the side effects and results of herbal remedies for erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.

Your doctor can explain what to expect when using products like these.

Some tips and tricks:

1. If a supplement has more than one herb, chances are higher for side effects.

2. Some side effects to be wary of are: increased heart rate, anxiety, insomnia, diarrhea, skin rashes and nausea.

3. Look for both scientific and common names of herbs in the ingredients

4. Do some research on scientific studies of the supplement.

5. Mark on a calendar when you started using the supplement so that if any kind of side effect approaches, you can figure out if it started at the same time or shortly thereafter.

6. Most importantly, if you are taking nitrates, have a heart condition or are taking prescription drugs, talk to your doctor before taking any herbal supplements.

There’s a plethora of options out there, Herbal Supplements, Healthy diets to improve libido or Boston Medical Group’s unique approach.  If you have a heart condition and cannot use medications like Viagra, looking into Boston Medical Group might be well worth your while.

“Warning Signs for a Heart Attack” for Men with ED

November 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

According to Dr. Geoffery Hacket of the Good Hope Hospital in Birmingham, UK, men with erectile dysfunction are one and a half times more likely to have a heart attack.

“Continuing to ignore these issues on the basis that cardiologists feel uncomfortable mentioning the word ‘erection’ to their patients or that they may have to deal with the management of a positive response, is no longer acceptable and possibly, based on current evidence, clinically negligent,” he warned.”

Dr. Hacket adds that erectile dysfunction is a more pressing warning sign than high cholesterol or high blood pressure and even places men with ED at the same risk as being a smoker.

Erectile Dysfunction linked to Obesity?

November 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Could weight have a connection to Erectile Dysfunction?

According to a new study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, it just might.  The study focused on 2,435 Italian male patients who seeked outpatient treatment for sexual dysfunction between 2007 and 2001. Among those who participated, 41.5% were of normal weight, 42.4% were over weight, 12.1% were obese, and 4% were severely obese. The mean age of the study was 52.

For men, obesity’s influence on sexual function appears to be a physical issue — not a self-esteem or emotional problem.  The study also concluded that conditions related to obesity, particularly hypertension (or high blood pressure), are the most significant causes of obesity-related erectile dysfunction. Abnormal penile blood flow was found to be linked to high blood pressure.
